What Is Keto Diet?

Keto diet is a high-protein, high-fat content, low-carbohydrate diet. When on a keto diet, the body derives its energy from fat as opposed to the carbohydrates. This fat is obtained when the liver functions to convert fatty acids to ketone bodies.

Keto is short for ketogenic is the adjective of ketogenesis which corresponds to “ketone bodies production”.

Interesting fact: The keto diet is believed to have surfaced back in the 1920s to aid in the treatment of epilepsy.

How Does The Keto Diet Work?

The primary goal of a keto diet is to enter the state of ketosis via fat metabolism wherein fat is used up by the body instead of carbohydrates. With fewer carbohydrates, the body can be fuelled by ketones as a result of the conversion of fats.

When a person consumes fewer carbohydrates, lesser than 50 grams a day, the body gradually enters into a state wherein it is deprived of fuel that is readily available to use up (blood sugar). This process usually takes three to four days after which the body starts disintegrating fats and protein to produce energy. This is called ketosis which helps one lose weight.
